In 1095, at the Council of Clermont, Pope Urban II called the knights of Europe to free Jerusalem, and those who swore to go sewed a red cloth cross onto their clothing as the mark of their vow. That cross went with them onto their shields, and carried them all the way to the Holy City in 1099.
