At Clermont in 1095, Pope Urban II called on the knights of Europe to march for Jerusalem, and those who swore the vow sewed a cloth cross onto their clothes. Taking the cross became the oath of a lifetime. By 1200 the knight who made it fought behind the great helm: a flat-topped steel cylinder with narrow eye slits and pierced breaths, worn over mail and a padded cap. Here the bone great helm carries the red cross across the brow and down the face, embroidered in Crusader red and bone on a black cap.
