Before they were knights, they were nurses. The Order of St John began as a hospital for pilgrims in Jerusalem, and in 1113 Pope Paschal II took it under papal protection. Within a generation the Hospitallers were one of the great fighting orders of Outremer, holding Krak des Chevaliers and fighting at Acre to the last. Their eight-pointed cross above HOSPITALLER and the year MCXIII, printed black on black in charcoal on a heavyweight black tee.
