In 1113 Pope Paschal II took the hospital of St John in Jerusalem under papal protection, and the Knights Hospitaller were born. They nursed pilgrims, held Krak des Chevaliers, and were among the last to leave Acre in 1291. Their eight-pointed cross within a double ring, encircled by ORDO HOSPITALIS and the year MCXIII, printed in Crusader red on a heavyweight black hoodie.
