During the siege of Acre in 1190, merchants from Bremen and Lübeck set up a field hospital for German crusaders under the sails of their ships. By 1198 it had become a military order: the Teutonic Knights, who wore a black cross on a white mantle. Their cross above a banner reading ORDO TEUTONICUS, with ACRE MCXC beneath, printed black on black in charcoal on a heavyweight black tee.
