When the crusaders took Jerusalem in 1099, they founded a kingdom in the land they called Outremer, and they gave it an emblem: a great cross with four smaller crosses in its quarters. It flew over the Holy City and its castles for nearly a century, and it remains the best-known symbol of the crusader East.
