Crossbow Patch | Black

In 1139 the Second Lateran Council banned the crossbow for use against Christians. Against the armies of Outremer's enemies, it was fair game. Crusader crossbowmen could pierce mail at range and hold back horse archers that outpaced any knight, and Richard the Lionheart relied on them at Jaffa in 1192. He was killed by a crossbow bolt seven years later. The crossbow with its bolt drawn in red, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
