In 1119 a handful of knights in Jerusalem swore themselves to poverty, obedience and the protection of pilgrims. They called each other brother, ate together, prayed together and rode into battle together, and their Rule forbade any brother to quit the field while the enemy outnumbered them less than three to one. Two knightly swords crossed behind a red heater shield bearing the flared cross: the mark of that brotherhood, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
