Outremer was held by stone as much as by steel. Its knights were always outnumbered, so they built castles to hold the land: walls, towers and keeps that a small garrison could defend for months. The greatest was Krak des Chevaliers, handed to the Hospitallers in 1142 and held by them until 1271. It still stands today. A crusader castle with twin towers and a central keep, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
