At Clermont in 1095, Pope Urban II called on the knights of Europe to march for Jerusalem, and those who swore the vow sewed a cloth cross onto their clothes. By 1200 the knight who took the cross fought behind the great helm: a flat-topped steel cylinder with narrow eye slits and pierced breaths, worn over mail and a padded cap. The great helm with the red cross across the brow and down the face, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
