The Knights Hospitaller began as a hospital for pilgrims in Jerusalem, and in 1113 Pope Paschal II took them under papal protection. Within decades they were one of the great fighting orders of Outremer, holding Krak des Chevaliers and fighting at Acre to the last. Their eight-pointed cross, often said to stand for the eight beatitudes, later took the name of their final stronghold: the Maltese Cross. Embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
