In peace the Knights Hospitaller wore a black mantle with a white cross. In war they wore red. In 1259 Pope Alexander IV granted the order's knights a red surcoat bearing a plain white cross for battle, and the same arms went onto their shields: white cross on red, the colours they fought under from Krak des Chevaliers to the last stand at Acre. Embroidered in Crusader red and white on black twill.
