On the 15th July 1099 the First Crusade took Jerusalem, and the kingdom that followed took the Jerusalem Cross as its arms: one great cross potent with a smaller cross in each quarter, in gold on silver. It broke the first rule of heraldry, never metal on metal, and it was done on purpose. No other kingdom was Jerusalem, and its arms were meant to stand apart. The gold cross on a black roundel with a gold edge.
