The knights who marched on the First Crusade in 1096 carried the kite shield: long, rounded at the top and tapering to a point, built to cover a mounted man from shoulder to knee. It was the shield of the Norman world, the same shape seen on the Bayeux Tapestry, and it went all the way to Jerusalem. Over the next century it shortened into the heater shield. The kite shield bearing the red cross, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
