Before the great helm, there was the nasal helm. The knights of the First Crusade rode to Jerusalem in a simple conical steel cap with a single bar running down to guard the nose, worn over a mail hood. It left the face open to see and shout orders, and it was the helmet of Outremer's founding generation until the closed great helm took over around 1200. The conical helm with its riveted brow band and red cross, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
