To the knights who settled in the Holy Land it was simply Outremer: the land beyond the sea. After Jerusalem fell to the First Crusade in MXCIX, 1099, it became the name for the crusader states, the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Principality of Antioch and the Counties of Edessa and Tripoli, held by Western knights for nearly two hundred years. The name and the year it began, flanked by the red cross, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
