Every crusader was a pilgrim first. The men who took the cross swore a pilgrim's vow, carried a pilgrim's staff and scrip, and were granted a pilgrim's protection while they were away. The scallop shell was the badge of the medieval pilgrim, sewn onto hats and cloaks by those who had made the long road to a holy shrine. The pilgrim's scallop shell, embroidered in white on black twill.
