By 1200 the knight's face had disappeared behind steel. The great helm was a flat-topped iron cylinder with narrow eye slits and pierced breaths, worn over mail and a padded cap, and braced with a cross across the brow and down the face. It was the helm of the knights who held Outremer through the 13th century, embroidered here in Crusader red on black twill.
