In 1129, at the Council of Troyes, the Church formally recognised a small band of knights who had been guarding pilgrims on the roads to Jerusalem for a decade. With the backing of Bernard of Clairvaux they were given a Rule of their own, and the Knights Templar became the first military order of Outremer. The flared red cross on a white field, the colours of the Order, framed in black with a maroon edge.
