The crusader's sword was a single-handed arming sword, about a metre long, with a straight double-edged blade, a plain crossguard and a heavy round pommel to balance it. It was worn on the left hip and used from the saddle with a shield on the other arm. A young man became a knight when that sword was girded on him, often after a night of prayer before the altar. Two knightly swords crossed beneath the red cross, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
