Outremer means the land beyond the sea, and the sea is how it was reached. From the Third Crusade on, most crusaders sailed east in ships hired from Venice, Genoa and Pisa, and the fleets kept the crusader states supplied for two centuries. Richard the Lionheart's fleet left Sicily in 1191 and took Cyprus on the way to Acre. A crusader ship under a square sail bearing the red cross, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
