Three years after leaving Europe, the First Crusade reached Jerusalem in June 1099 with a fraction of the army that had set out. With no time for a long siege, they built siege towers from timber hauled from the coast and walked barefoot in procession around the walls. On the 15th July 1099, Godfrey of Bouillon's men crossed from their tower onto the wall and the city fell. The siege and its year, MXCIX, embroidered in white and Crusader red on black twill.
